Honors Connections

The Honors Program offers specific sections of Connections just for Honors students. In past years, students found that Honors Connections prepared them to hit the ground running in their Honors classes, and as in all Connections sections they felt better prepared to start school.

I think the Honors program, in general, has helped me to connect to school better. I felt very welcome and actually wanted! Dr. Fox did a very good job of welcoming us and making us feel we had people to help us, and people to talk to for advice. I think the faculty panel was also very helpful and it was nice to meet some of the Honors professors.

Q. Why are there distinct Connections sections for Honors students?

A1. We want to foster community building. Most of the students in Honors Connections will also be in one or more of your fall classes.

In Connections I met a lot of the Honors students that I eventually became friends with in my Honors classes.

A2. We are able to focus more specifically on the kinds of issues important to high-ability students.

A3. Students who took the dedicated Honors sections of Connections in recent years seemed more relaxed and "with it" during the first week of classes than the Honors students who did not.

It was a good jump start on college and it helped me feel a lot more comfortable when I started my first week of school.

Q. Are the assignments different?

A1. In the regular Connections sections, there are materials on note-taking, study skills and the like, which are geared towards any class. In Honors, our lessons have been built from the classes you're actually enrolled in fall semester (see the Honors Courses link to the right).

The work we did was stimulating and I enjoyed meeting other Honors students. We did work and activities that really captured my attention...

Q. Are the assignments harder?

A. No

Q. Are there more of them?

A. No

It was fun doing things that were more at my level and with people at my level.

Q. What about the faculty?

A. They are handpicked, based on, among other things, their intimate knowledge of USU's programs for high-ability students.

It was great to get introduced to members of the faculty. It made me feel like I had some people to talk to if I had questions about the University.

Q. Who else is involved?

A. Each year, the Honors Program hires several advanced Honors students to work as Honors Fellows, who mentor other Honors students. An Honors Fellow will be assigned to each section of Honors Connections.

Q. Are there any special activities?

A1. Yes. In the past, Honors has hosted a luncheon specifically for Honors Connections students. Many instructors take their students on fun field trips or participate in local service projects. You can see photos of past activities at the Honors Photo Gallery

Q. Is there any reason why a scholarship student shouldn't take Connections?

A. No

I felt like I was around people who were just like me. Everyone wanted to be there and was very motivated.

Q. How do I enroll in an Honors section?

A. If you're an Honors student, you'll be able to select Honors Connections as part of your course cluster or at SOAR. If you're not yet an Honors student, contact the Honors office.
