Honors & University Studies
The USU Honors Program is both a degree program and an opportunity for you to meet a portion of your University Studies requirements in Honors courses. You should plan to take 12 credits of Honors courses during your first two years at USU. The completion of the Departmental Honors with Honors in University Studies degree is a total of 27 Honors credits: 12 of Honors in University Studies, and 15 in Departmental Honors.
Below is a description of how Honors courses fit into USU's University Studies requirements. Please only refer to this page as a general guideline; see the USU General Catalog and your department's Major Requirements Sheets for a complete description of University Studies requirements.
General Education Requirements (27 - 31 credits)
Competency Requirements (9 - 13 credits)
Communications Literacy (CL) (6 credits)
- Honors ENGL 2010H (3 credits) meets part of this requirement
Quantitative Literacy (QL) (3 credits)
- Honors MATH 1220H meets this requirement
Breadth Requirements (18 credits)
Students meet the University's Breadth requirements in six categories (see below). One breadth course must be taken on campus in a University Studies course (see below). Students eligible for the Honors Program will take HONR 1300, 1320, 1330, 1340, 1350, or 1360 in their first semester at USU. Please note that at least two Breadth courses must have a USU or HONR prefix.
Students should check with their advisors to determine which transfer, concurrent enrollment credits, AP, or CLEP scores can be used to meet Breadth requirements.
Honors versions of each of the Breadth courses are offered each year in the fall semester. A few are also offered in the spring semester.
- HONR 1300H (Breadth, U.S. Institutions)
- HONR 1320H (Breadth, Civilization: Humanities)
- HONR 1330H (Breadth, Civilization: Creative Arts)
- HONR 1340H (Breadth, Social Science)
- HONR 1350H (Breadth, Integrated Life Science)
- HONR 1360H (Breadth, Integrated Physical Science)
Depth Requirements (6 credits)
Approved 3000-level or above courses must be taken from two of the following three categories: Depth Life and Physical Sciences (DSC), Depth Humanities and Creative Arts (DHA), and Dept Social Sciences (DSS). Each student must select a course from each of the two categories that do not include his or her major. Honors versions of each are offered at least once each year as:
- HONR 3010H Depth Life and Physical Sciences (DSC)
- HONR 3020H Depth Humanities and Creative Arts (DHA)
- HONR 3030H Depth Social Sciences (DSS)
Categorization of Majors for Breadth and Depth Requirements
In selecting Depth courses, you must choose those outside the category assigned to your major. If you are undecided as to your major, choose University Studies courses that are outside any of your possible majors.
