Creative Writing
Honors has identified a suite of courses that, taken as a set, would earn an Honors designation. It is designed for students who choose not to pursue Honors in their major, or because Honors is not offered in their major, but whose interests and talents support the development of original, publishable writing.
Eligibility for Acceptance:
Qualified students will have cumulative GPAs of at least 3.30 and whose writing portfolio had been screened by the Honors Program Coordinator.
Program of Study:
The 15-credit requirement for the Honors designation is met in the following way:
- 3 credits of ENGL 2010 H (Fall, Spring)
- 9 or more credits (taken with an Honors contract) from the following:
- ENGL 3420 Fiction Writing
- ENGL 3430 Poetry Writing
- ENGL 3440 Creative Nonfiction Writing
- ENGL 4250/THEA 4250 Playwriting
- JCOM 3110 Beyond the Inverted Pyramid--Literary journalism
- JCOM 3140 Opinion Writing
- BIOL 4750 (Topics) Writing in Science and Technology
- 3 credits of HONR 4900H Senior/Thesis Project, offered each semester.
Requirements for Completion of Degree:
The successful candidate will graduate with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 overall and in at least 15 credits of upper division Honors coursework. The student will complete a senior Honors thesis/project and present the results in a public forum.
