This has been an eventful semester for Honors! Several of our students have found great success and we've had a lot to celebrate.

Honors was very pleased to dedicate the new Dr. Joyce Kinkead Honors Corner in the Merrill-Cazier Library on Friday, April 28. This Honors Corner comprises a group study room and adjacent loggia on the 3rd floor of the Library, room 334H. The Corner was dedicated in honor of Vice Provost Joyce Kinkead, and a plaque enumerating her accomplishments at Utah State was unveiled. Dr. Kinkead spearheaded many initiatives we now take for granted, including the Rhetoric Associate Program; Undergraduate Teaching Fellows; Research Fellows; the Pathway to the Arts; Graduation Guarantee; and the Common Freshmen Reading Experience.

Beginning Fall 2006, the Honors computers will once again be located in the library, room 334H, and Honors students will have access to the facilities for as late as the library is open.

In addition, donations have initiated the Joyce Kinkead Library Research Award, to be given to a student who has completed an outstanding research project using the library's resources. Donations are still being accepted for the Library Award and to complete the furnishing of the Honors Corner. For more information, contact University Advancement at 797-1158.

Utah State University's Scholars Wall of Fame was dedicated in the lower level of the Merrill-Cazier Library on Thursday, May 4, to honor USU's students who've been awarded prestige fellowships in years past.

As many of you know, the Honors Office manages on-campus advisement for students applying to national and international prestige fellowships, like the Truman, Rhodes, and Marshall. On that note, Utah State as a whole has some exciting announcements:

Heidi Wheelwright and Logan McKenna were awarded Barry M. Goldwater Fellowships. They were among 323 winners chosen from more than 1,000 applications. The Goldwater Award provides a sophomore or junior with up to $7,500 for 1-2 years to cover tuition and expenses. Awards are based on a lengthy application process by students dedicated to research in math, science, and engineering. Keith Warnick received an Honorable Mention.

Josh Hirschi received an Honorable Mention from the Morris K. Udall Scholarship foundation. The Udall award is for students who study environmental science or Native American issues.

Julie Major, a USU alum, received the James Madison Fellowship, Utah State's first! Julie will return to USU this fall to enroll in a Master's of Teaching program. As a James Madison Fellow, Julie will travel to Washington D.C. to participate in a Summer Institute on the Constitution, and when she returns to Utah, the foundation will cover her tuition, books, fees, room and board up to $12,000 per year for two years.

Thanks to the generosity of Art and Mary Heers, Honors was pleased to award the first annual Honors Study Abroad Scholarship, available for students who will study abroad in the next year. Katherine Shakespeare was the first awardee and will receive $1000 toward a summer language program in Freiburg, Germany. Brianne Bartlett, Mannie Marinello, Holly Murdock, and Sarah Platt each received an Honorable Mention in the amount of $500. Brianne will study in France, Mannie in Scotland, Holly in London and Paris, and Sarah in Italy.

The 31st annual Last Lecture took place April 13 in the TSC Ballroom. Mark Damen, Professor of History and Theatre, was nominated and interviewed by Honors students and selected in February. His talk—"'Look there, look there!' What's the Past Imperative?"— addressed six misconceptions about history, and five conceptual plans we ought to have for the future. You may read Professor Damen's talk (as a pdf) here.

Mark Brunson, Professor of Environment and Society and Director of Undergraduate Education for the College of Natural Resources, received the first Honors Faculty award since 1994 for his service to Utah State's undergraduates.

Honors also took this opportunity to recognize the 2005-06 Honors Fellowship. McKenzie Anderson, James Young, Brad Mumford, Brianne Bartlett, Stephanie Ankeny, Kimberly Call, Erin Hepner, Mannie Marinello, Whittney Olsen, and Kaitlin Neville did a great job helping with the fall breadth courses, several recruitment events, and Honors activities throughout the year. Thanks to each of them for their hard work!

And, of course, this means that Honors is proud to announce the 2006-07 Honors Fellowship. We've listed their names and the courses to which they'll be assigned for fall term.

For the third year, Honors has selected a Helen B. Cannon Awardee from among the Honors students who will be working on their senior theses next school year. Mary-Marie Austin will receive $1000 as she completes her undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences next school year. Kim Call and Mannie Marinello will each receive a $300 Honorable Mention. Mary, Kim, and Mannie were honored at a small luncheon—with Larry and Helen Cannon and their son-in-law, Nathan Alder—on April 27. Congratulations to Mary, Kim, and Mannie!

Honors student Scott Davis was awarded the Manson A. Stewart Scholarship by the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) for the 2006-07 school year. Applicants to this award must be nominated by a faculty mentor and intend to continue studying Latin and Greek during the scholarship year. Scott will receive $1000.

The Classics Program at Utah State celebrated Classics Day on Friday, April 14. Two Honors students were honored at the awards ceremony. Seth Jeppesen was named the best overall classics student by the USU Classics Program and Katherine Shakespeare received the CAMWS Award for Outstanding Accomplishment in Classical Studies.

Seth (pictured left as a Roman Imperator at the Edith Bown Latin Teaching Club) watched his senior project come to life in the Studio Theatre on April 26, with a staged reading of his own translation of Menander's Samia directly from the Greek, directed by Dr. Mark Damen. Seth says that Menander wrote Samia in about 315 BCE and we currently have and are able to read about four fifths of the play. For his project, Seth translated what we have of the Greek and filled in the textual gaps with his own dialogue so that the play could be performed. Seth has been accepted to a one-year postbaccalaureate program in Classics at UNC Chapel Hill.

Also on Wednesday, April 26, three Honors students performed as part of the Concerto contest concert. Nyle Matsuoka, piano performance major, performed a Prokofiev solo, while Ann Philips, Amy Carruth, and Albert Lund performed in the orchestra.

Student Showcase took place April 4 in the TSC lounge area. Of the dozens of students who presented posters and papers, twenty-five were Honors students. Honors is also proud to report that four Honors students were named Undergraduate Researcher of the Year. Congratulations to Zachary Ames, Brianne Bartlett, Katie Brown, and Glen de Guzman.

And, finally, several of our Honors students are also university Research Fellows and many of them have exciting plans for the near future. We'd like to share:
Jennifer Albretsen, REU Fellowship, Dartmouth, nanomaterials
Kaitlin Neville, REU Fellowship, U of Oklahoma, earthquakes and structures
Jennifer Fisch, American Heart Association: Western States Affiliate scholarship
Mary Shepherd, College of Science Mini-Grant for research in mathematics
Brianne Bartlett, Study Abroad, France
Amanda Marinello, Study Abroad, Scotland, URCO grant
Ann Phillips, Madeline Island Chamber Music Festival on Lake Superior
Dani Babbel, Huanchaco, Peru, fieldwork related to the topics of globalization, fishing, and the environment
Camille Olsen, internship in DC (spring semester)

We hope all of our students continue to find success in their endeavors. Have a safe and fun summer!
